The most powerful weapon we as Christians have, is the Word of God.

In his writing about putting on the Armour o f God, Paul refers to the Word of God as a sword in Ephesians 6:17 KJV …and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

In Hebrews 4:12 it says, For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Paul says that our spiritual sword is the Word of God and it is able to discern the thoughts and the intents of our heart. Lets break these two thoughts down a little further.

Our Spiritual Sword

Ephesians 6 says that we do not wrestle with flesh and blood, or humans, but against spiritual powers. Even Jesus faced this same struggle when He had separated Himself for a time of consecration…and a time to be tempted by the devil, yep, that’s what it says. (Check out Matt 4:1)

Now, Jesus had the power to destroy the devil on the spot. With the slightest nod from Jesus, Michael and his band of warriors would have taken care of the devil without a second thought. And the angels were in fact in the area as they showed up almost immediately after the devil left to minister to Jesus.

It’s true Jesus could have destroyed His tempter right there, yet He chose another approach instead. He chose rather to quote portions of scripture to “fight” against His spiritual adversary. If Jesus, having all power under Heaven, chose to fight his temptation with the the Word, shouldn’t we use this same approach.

A Discerner of the Thoughts and Intents of the Heart

The Contempary English Version says it like this:

Hebrews 4:12 CEV What God has said isn’t only alive and active! It is sharper than any double-edged sword. His word can cut through our spirits and souls and through our joints and marrow, until it discovers the desires and thoughts of our hearts.

If the Word of God is able to discover the desires and thoughts of our heart, maybe that’s why the writer says in Psalms 119:11 KJV Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.

Now,memorizing scripture alone isn’t going to keep you out of trouble, but it will help you fight or resist the temptation if you recall those scriptures in a time of temptation.

Daily Living

We should spend time each day in the Word of God. If prayer is our words to Him, then the Bible is quite literally His words to us. I’m not sure you will “go to hell” for not reading the Bible, but I will say you it will be much easier getting to Heaven if you do read the Bible.

I challenge you to expose yourself to the Word of God a little bit every day through reading, memorizing, (one good way to do that is to get involved inM90) or listening to it on your MP3 player for a few days and see if it doesn’t change your life.
